New
York State Standardized Testing
|
|
|
|
|
The New York Institute for Special Education is conducting a research
project on the accommodation of New York statewide tests for students
with blindness or visual impairments. This is a critical issue for teachers,
students and parents as these tests have become a principal way for
the state to evaluate student achievement. We have created a web-based
form for your input on this topic. The purpose of this data collection
is to compile information and feedback on test questions that may be
biased for the blind and visually impaired student.

All
too often students and teachers have complained of problems on test
administration procedures and test items asking for student responses
that are difficult or impossible given their visual acuity. It is the
intent of the project to identify and examine bias that exists in the
presentation of questions in New York State high stakes tests. We are
requesting your help getting the word out to teachers, guidance counselors,
school testing personnel and principals that test students with visual
impairments.

School personnel should complete the form
at http://www.nybeacons.org/nytesting.html
by identifying the problem questions and procedures, and suggesting
how they can be improved. This information will be collected and shared
with the New York State Education Department and it will include recommendations
on how to reduce the inherent bias and discrimination for these students.
Thank you in advance for your vital help in this matter.
